Ulysses 1.6

Posted by admin 23 July, 2008 Comments Off

Call me crazy but I bet there are a few would-be, and some actual, novelists out there who read Apple. Am I right? Thought so. If you are amongst that august group then you might be tickled by the Blue Technologies Group’s text editor: Ulysses. It was built from the ground up with writers in mind with features that include:

  • Grouping of files
  • Semantic Text editing (this allows you to create your own markup language. You can mark up your document in a way that makes sense to you and then export it and see those words that you marked as bold show up as bold in the resulting document. Trust me, this is cool stuff)
  • A single window for all your documents
  • Powerful search

And that is just scratching the surface. Read the full feature run down to find out all the details.
Ulysses now comes in two flavors: Ulysses is the full featured application which costs 79.99 € (half off for EDU buyers) and Ulysses Core which has a subset of features (check out this chart to see what the Core version leaves out) and will set you back 39.99 € ( 25.99 € for education buyers).

Pope Benedict XVI texting out messages of encouragement

Posted by admin 16 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Don’t act like you didn’t know that Pope Benedict XVI was down with modern technology. As part of World Youth Day, the man himself will begin sending out texts of encouragement to pilgrims who have signed up through Telstra to receive them. A total of four gigantic “prayer walls” have been erected at the Sydney Opera House, the Domain, Darling Harbour and Randwick Racecourse in Australia, where folks will actually be able to send their own messages for all to presumably see. The first message sent out? “Young friend, God and his people expect much from u because u have within you the Fathers supreme gift: the Spirit of Jesus - BXVI.” Hllujh, amn brtha.

Text from your iPhone for free

Posted by admin 1 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Have you been enjoying the 200 free, monthly text messages that accompany your 1st generation iPhone? Then don’t upgrade to iPhone 3G, because those same messages will cost you $5US per month, unless you know this trick.

Dave Merten at Macsimum News has posted a simple, four-step process that will allow you to get free texting out of your 3G iPhone that you should really check out.

Kudos for Macsimum News for posting the trick. Sure, you’re only saving $5 a month — the cost of one Venti latte from you-know-where or approximately 1 gallon of gas — but it all adds up, my friends.

Tofu makes on-screen reading actually bearable

Posted by admin 26 June, 2008 (0) Comment

If you’re like us, you have to read long blocks of text on a monitor all the time, and it’s kind of a pain for your eyes. E-books and long PDF articles would be great if they could somehow get diced into neat, readable columns. Hey, it works for newspapers. Well, Tofu brings that pleasant reading experience to the Mac.

In a nutshell, Tofu cuts up what you’re reading — whether it’s a PDF, a doc, or a chunk of text you’ve selected — into columns. This is a good, because monitors are wider than the human eye is really comfortable with, and columns fit the text into your optimal scanning area for easy reading. Tofu’s full screen mode and adjustable text size and colors are crucial, too. This app is good enough that we’ll think twice before printing out something we can just read in Tofu. [amarsagoo.info]

Apple leaves placeholder text in a published MobileMe page, eh?

Posted by admin 23 June, 2008 (0) Comment

Canada has many things going for it: maple trees everywhere, single-payer health care system and a one-of-a-kind Apple page. One of our readers just tipped us about an error on the MobileMe signup completion page for Canada. Apparently, Apple’s designers left in some placeholder text on the signup “thank you” page. While Apple does (yes, they really do) make some mistakes, leaving greeked text on a webpage isn’t usually one of them.

You can see the Freudian slip by visiting Apple’s Canadian MobileMe signup completion page. Read
