Favorite iPhone apps: Robert’s take

Posted by admin 27 August, 2008 (0) Comment

Now that Steve, Victor, and Mike have all made their opinions clear, I get to tell you what apps I use most on my iPod touch.

My first favorite is Exposure, an app that lets you browse Flickr photos. Personally, my favorite thing to do in a boring phone meeting is to browse Flickr’s “Featured” category, and find new wallpaper for my iPod. Which leads me to my only feature request: it doesn’t let you save images to the local “Saved Photos” album. (What you can do, however, is open the image in Safari, and save it from there.) Exposure does much more than this, too — browsing photos taken nearby, or searching for photos by keyword. Exposure is a great image browser all around, and it’s free, but ad-supported. A premium version (sans ads) is $9.99.

The second is time:calc. It may seem a little strange, but I’ve always wanted a calculator that figures time instead of decimal numbers. As a freelancer, some of my contracts are retainer-based, so I have to calculate how much time I have left for a particular task after work has been done. time:calc does this effortlessly: just enter hours, minutes and seconds, and use mathematical operators as you would a normal calculator. For video editing, it also includes support for time code in a wide variety of frame rates. time:calc is $1.99, and well worth it.

Kevin Rose iPod Rumors: Price Cut, New iTunes 8.0 Features and Tall, Rounded Nano

Posted by admin 23 August, 2008 (1) Comment

Kevin Rose’s Apple crystal ball has been wrong more often than not (he was sorta right about $199 iPhone), but this time he’s seen pictures people! (”It looks pretty cool.”) He says that not only will the new iPod nano be tall and skinny and giant-screened like we’ve heard, he says it’ll be rounded (like iPhone 3G’s ass-side, but all the way around), and even provides this handy rendering. His other rumorage, like a huge iTunes update with for-real new features, is all way more reasonable than his past forecasting, so they’re actually possible too!

Posted by admin 21 August, 2008 (0) Comment

SplashIDAnother venerable title from the world of Palm OS and Windows Mobile has made it to the iPhone and iPod touch.SplashID for iPhone / iPod touch is now shipping. With over 500,000 copies of SplashID sold, it’s by far the most popular secure personal information manager for handheld devices.

Developer SplashData has provided features that make this application very attractive. For example, there are Mac and Windows desktop apps that sync wirelessly with the iPhone version, so you can do a lot of your editing and data entry from the desktop instead of using the iPhone’s keyboard. Data is protected by 256-bit Blowfish encryption, and there’s a built-in generator for creating unguessable passwords.

SplashID is available now from the App Store (click opens iTunes) for $9.95 and the desktop version is available at the SplashData website for $19.99. There’s also a 30-day free trial available.

Two of SplashData’s other mobile titles, SplashMoney and SplashShopper, are also now available for iPhone and iPod touch. [Read]

Dealzmodo: Apple Drops iPod Touch Refurb Price To $199

Posted by admin 19 August, 2008 (0) Comment

Apple’s been slowly dropping the price of refurb 8GB iPod Touches on its website, and now it’s cheaper than ever at $199. That’s $100 off the regular price of $299, not to mention it’s a 33% discount. If you’ve been wanting one of the awesome media players and Internet tablets, this is about as good a deal as you’re going to find. Also the 16GB version has been dropped to $299, also $100 off the original price. It’s not as good a discount percentage-wise, but it’s still very tempting to those looking to buy. iPhone 101: Restore your homescreen icons

Posted by admin 18 August, 2008 (0) Comment

Rearranging the icons on the home screen of your iPhone is a part of the customization fun that Apple built in. However, if you rearranged your icons and want them back to factory specifications, it is as easy as a simple tap. Just navigate to Settings > General > Reset. Once there, select the “Reset Home Screen Layout” button. A dialog will pop-up asking for a confirmation.

Once you return to the home screen, you will notice that all the icons are placed just like they were when you first turned on your iPhone! Third-party applications’ icons will follow the default applications.
