Mac vs. PC — Which Is for You?

Mac or PC – it’s the perennial debate for anyone looking to buy a new computer (or win an argument). Passionate and valid points exist in both camps, but it ultimately boils down to your personal tastes, needs, and budget. We played around with all shapes and sizes of Macs (Mini, iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro) and PCs (Gateway One desktop, Gateway M-Series laptops, Lenovo x300 laptop, Acer Ferrari 1100, Sony TP Series, and Dell XPS M2010) to figure out which type of computer was best on a variety of fronts. Much to our surprise, not all of our findings turned out as we expected….

Wallpaper Clocks

I was on the hunt today for a clock application and ran across an interesting implementation in Wallpaper Clock. Basically it’s a small application that dynamically redraws your Desktop every minute, to keep your time and date, well, up-to-date. The application itself is free, but requires particular artwork files in a variety of designs. Some of these clock files are available in a free, low-quality version, while others are only available to registered users (along with the free ones in higher-quality versions). It is also possible to create your own Wallpaper Clocks with your own images.
Wallpaper Clocks is a free download however there is a registration fee for subscription based access to the maker’s website with artwork unavailable in the free version. Subscriptions are $8.99 for 3 months, $12.99 for 6 months, $19.99 for one year, and $29.99 for lifetime access.

PGP rolls out Whole Disk Encryption for Mac
PGP Corp., a security company focused on data encryption, plans to announce that it is offering a Mac OS X version of its Whole Disk Encryption product.
Whole Disk Encryption is used on the Windows platform in multiple verticals. John Dasher, director of product development at PGP, says the Mac OS X version is partially in response to increased enterprise adoption of the Mac platform. The announcement coincides with Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference.
“A lot of our customers are adopting Macs and told us they would like Whole Disk Encryption for the Mac,” says Dasher. “Most of our customers have at least a few Macs.”
Whole Disk Encryption retails for $119 a seat and is in compliance with FIPS 140-2, a data encryption standard validated by the U.S. government. The latest version of Whole Disk Encryption (9.9) adds pre-boot authentication for Intel-based Mac OS X systems and protects data on desktops, laptops and removable media. PGP’s Whole Disk Encryption locks down all contents on laptops, desktops and drives of all kind. Read the rest of this entry

G4 Cube shell used to house Mac mini and friends
In Apple-loving households, there’s a decent chance the Power Mac G4 Cube will never lose its luster. Case in point: one particular fanboy (yeah, we said it) took a gutted Cube housing and neatly fitted his Mac mini, Airport Extreme and “accessory HDD case” inside. Of course, he did have to exercise quite a bit of patience and showcase his cutting skills in order to make the optical drive accessible, but the end result is certainly something to be proud of. Hit the read link for the gallery of shots taking you from start to finish.
