Terminal Tips: Make hidden Dock icons transparent

Without using Exposé, it is hard to tell which Mac OS X applications are hidden and which aren’t. But, with a simple Terminal hack, you can have all your application icons displayed as transparent. Simply open Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) and type the following command exactly:
defaults write com.apple.Dock showhidden -bool YES
Once you type the command and press enter, you need to restart the Dock by typing “killall Dock” and pressing enter. Once the Dock restarts and you hide applications, you will notice that hidden applications have a transparent look. If you want to reverse the command, just replace the “YES” with a “NO” and restart the Dock again.

Data loss from App Store updates
When Apple first announced that third-party applications would be coming to the iPhone, they also announced an update mechanism in the App Store. On the surface, this ability to update applications (mostly for free) is a nice feature, however, when you learn that Apple didn’t include a means for developers to save the data files created by their apps, you tend to start rethinking “nice feature.”
I first noticed this when I updated Enigmo and lost all of my saved games. In addition, I just updated Facebook and lost my login information. Apple should have provided a way for applications to save information like this for retrieval after an update.
Have you encountered data loss in after updating your iPhone’s third-party applications? Be sure to sound off in the comments.

iPhone 101: Re-downloading an application
Has a sync somehow gone terribly wrong and you’ve lost your favorite paid application for your iPhone or iPod touch? Well, if you didn’t have a backup of it in your iTunes library, fear not. Apple has designed the App Store to allow for re-downloading purchased applications.
All you have to do is navigate to the application that you originally bought in the App Store and tap “Buy.” You will have to enter your password, and the App Store will return you to your home screen where it displays a message saying that you’ve already bought this application and are entitled to an additional free download. After you tap “OK,” your app will begin downloading.
Now you don’t have to fret about losing your favorite iPhone or iPod touch application.
