iPhone 101: Re-downloading an application

Posted by admin 19 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Has a sync somehow gone terribly wrong and you’ve lost your favorite paid application for your iPhone or iPod touch? Well, if you didn’t have a backup of it in your iTunes library, fear not. Apple has designed the App Store to allow for re-downloading purchased applications.

All you have to do is navigate to the application that you originally bought in the App Store and tap “Buy.” You will have to enter your password, and the App Store will return you to your home screen where it displays a message saying that you’ve already bought this application and are entitled to an additional free download. After you tap “OK,” your app will begin downloading.

Now you don’t have to fret about losing your favorite iPhone or iPod touch application.

Brando offers A2DP adapter for iPhone & iPod touch

Posted by admin 18 July, 2008 (0) Comment

A lot of folks had been hoping for support for the A2DP Bluetooth audio stack in the 3G iPhone. (A2DP allows for stereo music over Bluetooth in addition to the standard mono Bluetooth headset audio.) Unfortunately, Apple did not gratify this particular wish, but now Hong Kong-based accessory maker Brando is stepping to the gap with the INFINXX AP23.

Basically, it’s a small dongle that plugs into the iPhone or iPod touch Dock port. You can then sync a pair of Bluetooth headphones (with microphone) to both the dongle and the iPhone allowing for phone as well as music support. While the INFINIXX is far from the first A2DP Bluetooth dongle, it is one of the smallest (~5 grams) and clearly takes its design cues from the iPhone.

The Brando INFINXX AP23 is $62. Standard shipping is $3 (7-20 working days) while express shipping (2-7 working days) is $39.

First Look: Texas Hold ‘Em

Posted by admin 17 July, 2008 (1) Comment

Apple Texas Hold 'Em for iPhoneI’ve been having such a good time getting my virtual wallet cleaned out by my Texas Hold ‘Em opponents that it’s taken me three days to write this post!

Texas Hold ‘Em is an iPhone port of the popular Apple iPod game that came out a few years ago. If you’re a fan of poker tournaments or just intrigued by Texas Hold ‘Em, this $4.99 game is a heck of a lot cheaper and less stress on your home life than going to Vegas and playing the real thing.

The play action, as you can see in the gallery below, is amazingly realistic. Each of the players even has a “tell” (distinctive physical cue that they’re either bluffing or have a really good hand) that you can pick up after a while. There’s music that plays in the background, a Wi-Fi multiplayer mode, a number of poker rooms (including a garage that has a shelf full of old computers on one wall), and a good assortment of well-rendered virtual opponents. Frankly, I think it’s one of the unsung bargains of the App Store.

iPhone 101: Saving images in Safari

Posted by admin 17 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Have you ever been using Safari on your iPhone or iPod touch and wanted to save an image? Well, the 2.0 firmware makes this easy!

Just tap and hold on any picture in Safari. When you do, a menu will pop up allowing you to save the image to your camera roll or follow the image link. Apple even places a subtle outline around the selected image (nice touch, Apple).

The great thing about this tip: it also works in Mail. Now you’ll never be without your images. Now for that copy/paste (ahem, looking at you, Apple).

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

iPod touch 1.1.5 software also available

Posted by admin 16 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Apple yesterday released an update for iPod touch for those users who don’t want to pony up the ten bucks for the 2.0 software update. However, Macworld could discern no difference between 1.1.4 and 1.1.5, and no release notes are available.

I’d conjecture that the same security fixes that were included in the 2.0 update are included in this one, similar to the way Tiger is still updated with security patches. At least, I hope that’s the case.

Obviously, no functionality is offered as a part of the update: you’ll have to spring for the 2.0 update for that.

You can download the update via iTunes by clicking “Check for Updates” with your iPod connected to your computer, and opting out of the 2.0 upgrade. Thanks, David and Toon, for the tip!
