SlimKey 2 keyboard stand adds USB hub
Macessity, makers of the LowKey stand we covered a while back, has released version 2 of their SlimKey keyboard stand adding a USB hub on the right side. Basically the SlimKey is a steel shelf designed to hide Apple’s slim keyboards under your iMac or LCD monitor so as to conserve desk space when you’re not typing. The newest version incorporates a 4-port powered USB 2.0 hub on the right rear for a mouse and other USB peripherals. Personally, I find this design rather more aesthetically pleasing than the LowKey which puts the USB hub in front.
The SlimKey V2 is available for pre-order $64.99 and will be shipping on July 21. They also still have the SlimKey version 1 without the USB hub for $39.99.

HybRed PC Casemod Gives the iMac a Severe Inferiority Complex

Before we get into the details of this compact HybRed PC casemod from modder Ville “Willek” Kyrö, let’s set the scene, shall we? An iMac sits comfortably at a local coffee shop, its wifi at 100%, eagerly sucking down megabytes of the latest Natasha Bedingfield mp3 from iTunes when all of a sudden, the HybRed bursts through the door and orders *gulp* a medium coffee, black, and pays with cash! Que the scratching record as the iMac wets itself and shorts out. And… scene. More seriously, the all-in-one design is really all the Hybred shares with the iMac, because as you’ll see this is one serious gaming rig.

The Mac’s new friends
Macs have been on sale in Apple stores for years now. They also show up in reseller stores from time to time. What they haven’t done, until recently, is show up in conventional box stores.
That’s why I was pleasantly surprised when I went in to kill some time at my local Best Buy in Asheville, NC to find a mini-Apple-store within a store. The store featured only four laptops, including the MacBook Air and a pair of Apple iMacs.
The little display area may be nothing compared to an Apple store, but what caught my attention was not only how many people paid attention to the mini-store, but how they paid attention to it. In the usual areas, you see two kinds of people. Read the rest of this entry

Sources: Apple planning biggest back-to-school promo yet
Company senior vice president Ron Johnson stoked anticipation of the promo a few weeks ago while addressing some of his retail staff, people familiar with the matter say. Specifically, Johnson is said to have promised that this year’s promo would be the biggest “ever” for Apple.
While it’s unclear exactly what that means, speculation among those familiar with past promotions believe there’s a possibility the Cupertino-based company will tie some of its touch-screen handhelds into the mix — like the 8GB iPod touch.
